What are we doing within the framework of CFP?

Foresters' activites include afforestation of land, enriching the vertical structure of forest, e.g. introduction of a new generation under the shelter of old trees, appliccation of various methods of forest renewal and tending treatment which limit emission of carbon from soil, and using for this purpose the species with greater natural ability to absorb carbon dioxide.

The integral part of the project, besides already mentioned direct actions aimed at reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, are reserch works. Many scientists representing leading universitites and reserch institutes in Poland are involved.

In 2018, the estimation of the anticipated effect of the project for the next 30 years was conducted. According to the preliminary results, the forests within the Carbon Forests Project will additionally absorb about 1 milion tonnes of CO2. The estimation was made tith the aid of the Carbon Budget Model of the Canadian Forest Sector (CBM-CFS3). By using thismodel, it is possible to analuyze the changes in the amount of accumulated carbon in all forest layers, including the often neglected layers of undergrowth, understorey, litter or soil.

In the second half of 2018, auctioning of Carbon Dioxide Units is planned, meaning carbon accumulated as the result of additional acticities. The purchase of subject units ahould be one of the factors which shape public relations and corporate social responsibility.

The project assumens the intergration of many areas of activities:

  • nature conservation - taking additional ctivities in forestry aimed at increasing absorption of atmospheric carbon dioxide and reduction of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere;
  • science - development of modern carbon balance models in forest ecosystems for various scenarios of forest cultivation and managment;
  • economy - ecnouraging entrepreneurs to by Carbon Dioxide Units in order to finance environmental action proogrammes.
